Chewsday Review- Mayver's Peanut Butter
Lots of our fussy clients will happily eat a Peanut Butter sandwich. But are all Peanut Butters equal? Today I’m looking at Mayver’s Peanut Butter. Is this a reasonable option? Let’s see…
🔹Roasted peanuts (99.3%), salt
🔹Common allergens include: peanuts. May contain traces of tree nuts and sesame too.
🔹The high percentage of nuts (99.3%) is a huge positive for this Peanut Butter, given that other popular peanut butters contain only 60-85% nuts.
🔹Contain a reasonable amount of fibre. A 20g serving provides enough fibre to meet 11% of a toddler's daily fibre requirements and 9% of a preschoolers daily fibre requirements. That’s pretty decent for a protein food.
🔹Sodium content is WITHIN healthy guidelines at 255mg/100g. I’m pretty impressed by this. Many other peanut butters have a salt content at about 500-660mg/100g
🔹Sugar content well within healthy guidelines (which I’d expect as there is no added sugar). Comparatively, some other peanut butters have about double the sugar content.
🔹I think this peanut butter is delicious, and I don’t think it tastes any different from your standard/cheaper peanut butter.
🔹Saturated fat is above healthy guidelines at 6.8g/100g, which comes from the peanuts themselves. There are no added oils or hardened fats, so I’m not particularly bothered about this. In comparison, Bega Peanut Butter (with added oil) contains about 10g/100g of saturated fat.
🔹Total fat is almost five times the recommended guidelines at 49.3g/100g. Again though, this isn’t something I’m concerned about because nuts are naturally high in fat (and protein) and there is good evidence that they have a beneficial effect on our health.
🔹“At least 153 peanuts in every jar”. I couldn’t exactly count them, so we’ll have to trust them!
🔹“No added sugar, hardened fats, additives.” I think this is good to know, given that many standard peanut butters contain added sugar and salt.
🔹“5 Health stars” Great to see that this product gets a good rating despite the fat content (because these are good oils!)
🔹I’m a big fan of the Mayver’s Peanut Butter and this is the brand I buy (as you can tell from the half eaten jar in the picture!). Other peanut butters made from mostly peanuts with no added sugar or fat are also good options.
