Chewsday Review- Yoplait Mixed Berry Individual Tubs

Greek yoghurt is one of my personal go-to snacks, but I’m not loyal to one particular brand. I found one of these Yoplait’s in my fridge just this week. How timely! So, today I bring you a Chewsday review on these Yoplait mixed berry individual tubs.

🔶Ingredients:

🔹Milk, Milk solids, Skim milk, Sugar, Fruit (5.5%) (Blackberries, Strawberries, Blueberries), Water, Gelatine, Rice starch, Natural flavours, Stabiliser (pectin), Black carrot and blackcurrant concentrate, Lemon juice concentrate, Acidity regulator (sodium citrate), Firming agent (calcium chloride), Live yoghurt cultures: S. Thermophilus & L. Bulgaricus

🔹Pectin is added for stability. It is a naturally occurring complex carbohydrate in plant foods, which is generally well tolerated.

🔹Sodium citrate reduces acidity and improves the sour taste. It is generally well tolerated.

🔹Common allergen: Milk

🔶The positives:

🔹Calcium content is good at 151mg/100g. Per 160g tub, this provides 48% of a toddler’s calcium requirements and 35% of an older child’s daily requirements.

🔹Each tub provides 7.5g of protein. This is 54% of a toddler’s protein requirements and 38% of an older child’s protein requirements, which is very decent for a snack.

🔹Low sodium, as expected from yoghurt.

🔹Live yoghurt cultures can help promote a healthy gut.

🔹These are cheap, they come in a pack of six but work out to be about half the price of other brands such as Chobani.

🔶The negatives:

🔹20.2g of sugar per tub makes up about 5tsp of sugar! This is actually comparable to ice cream. (They don’t tell you how much is added sugar, but seeing how ‘sugar’ is listed as one of the first few ingredients, it’s likely to be a lot. Plus, unsweetened yoghurt would only have about 5g of sugar per 100g).

🔹Contains gelatine and is therefore not suitable for strict vegetarians and people who avoid beef for religious or other reasons.

🔶The marketing:

🔹“Real fruit” Not wrong, except that only 5.5% is fruit ...

🔹“Free from artificial colours, flavours and preservatives” But with lots of added sugar.

🔹“With 8 nutrients from milk” True, but you can get these same nutrients minus the added sugars from just regular milk.

🔶The alternatives:

🔹 This Yoplait yoghurt tub provides a good amount of calcium and protein but has a pretty high sugar content, so I wouldn’t make this an everyday item.

🔹Tamar Valley (no sugar added) and Dairy Dream tubs from Aldi are good alternatives with almost 2/3 less sugar than in these regular Yoplait tubs. At the same time, they do not compromise on the calcium and protein content.

🔹Tamar Valley, Chobani, and Fage are also good alternatives for gelatine-free yoghurt.
